7 Things We Learned from Last Year’s (Virtual) Donate Life Fun Run

As we enter the final days before our 13th Annual Donate Life Family Fun Run, we wanted to look back at last year’s event in preparation for our second year putting on an all-virtual race. Whether we’ve come together in-person or virtually, the outcome has always been the same: uniting donor families and friends, transplant recipients, living donors, hospital partners, and supporters of our mission to celebrate life, second chances, and the generosity of organ, eye, and tissue donors. Here’s what we learned after 2020’s virtual race:

1. You took the opportunity to walk or run ANYWHERE!

The tops of mountains, the sandy coastlines, the inner harbor...you traversed them all! What new locations are you planning for this year? We can’t wait to see!

2. You didn’t hesitate to get your fur babies in on the fun!

It was amazing to see such a great pet turnout! This year’s event will be another great opportunity to bring your furry friend along on your walk/run and snap a cute pic.

3. Your yards and neighborhoods were a great place to honor and remember your loved ones through your dedication signs.

Normally, your signs adorn the fences of the start and finish walkways of our race path at M&T Bank Stadium; but going virtual meant they were delivered right to your door to be displayed in front of your homes. We loved seeing your photos and we hope to see many more touching dedications this year!

4. You cherished spending time with close friends and family in a safe way.

Outdoor-friendly activities were a great way to reconnect with loved ones during 2020. Having the Fun Run last for a weekend, instead of just one day, meant you could find a time and a place that worked for everyone!

5. Runners and walkers joined us from all over the country!

We still can’t believe we got registrations from 49 STATES, as well as Puerto Rico and D.C.! Can we get all 50 this year? We’re excited to see how far we can reach with YOUR help!

6. That your pictures speak a thousand words—and we hope you keep sharing them!

With no event photographer on hand, it was up to you to capture this event—and you didn’t let us down! We hope to see plenty more beautiful photos and videos this year. Make sure to tag @TheLLF on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, and use the #DonateLifeFunRun hashtag so we can find your posts.

Also, don’t forget about our Spirit Awards! This year, we want to see your best race outfit, best chalk art, best pet photos, and best team photos. More info on how to submit here.

7. That regardless of whether we’re in-person or virtual, your support is as strong as ever.

Because of you, we had over 2,200 registrants and raised over $84,000. Although 2020 was a challenging year, we were incredibly inspired by your commitment to honoring and celebrating your loved ones.

We can’t wait to see you again at this year’s Donate Life Fun Run!
